Project charter generator
Project charter generator
A brand-neutral project charter for stage-gated projects. Fill in the sections, clear the readiness checks, then print to PDF or export. Nothing leaves your browser.
Checks

Project information
Who decides and who delivers. The sponsor owns the strategic case and the money, the project owner accepts the result and owns the benefits, the project manager runs the project day to day.
Budget and benefit
Pick the currency and scale once, every amount follows it. The analysis budget is the money released at G1 to reach the G2 go decision.
Phase gates
G1 opens the analysis phase once this charter is approved. G2 is the go decision for execution, based on the business case and plan. G3 is delivery of the project result to the owner. G4 closes the project after handover and the closure report.
Background, goals and scope
One item per line, each line becomes a bullet. Effect goals describe the change in the organization with a number and a date, not the things the project builds. Those go under deliverables.
Key milestones
Decision points and handovers the steering committee will track. Milestones are numbered M1, M2 and plotted on the gate timeline above.
Risk elements
Rate each risk on likelihood and consequence. Add the last evaluation to show the trend on the matrix. Anything rated High or Critical needs a planned action.
Relationship with other projects and partners
Dependencies in both directions, shared resources, vendors and implementation partners.
Realization of effects
Effects are realized after the project ends, so name the line owner who stays accountable, the measure and the moment it is taken.
Resources
Named people or roles, where they come from, for how long and at what share of their time.
Steering committee
The body that takes gate decisions and handles exceptions. The usual roles are prefilled, add names and units.
Governance
Reporting rhythm, the tolerances delegated to the project manager, and anything the approvers must know before they sign.
Attachments to the charter
Business case, plan, architecture or any document the approval relies on.
Signatures
Names and dates print on the document. The signature cells stay empty for wet or digital signing.
This is the document that Print / PDF and the exports produce. In the print dialog choose Save as PDF and A4.
