Pre-Hardened Browser Forks — Firefox / Gecko
Firefox / Gecko
| Browser | Platform | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Win / Mac / Linux | Strips all Mozilla telemetry, crash reporting, studies, Pocket. Ships with uBlock Origin and hardened defaults. | Daily driver — easy, fast, secure. Best Firefox fork for everyday use. | |
| Desktop Win / Mac / Linux | Co-developed with the Tor Project. Tor-grade anti-fingerprinting on the clearnet. Includes uBlock + NoScript. | Compartmentalized anonymity sessions. Pair with Mullvad VPN for IP privacy. | |
IronFox | Android only | Fork of Mull Browser (discontinued). Ships with uBlock by default, telemetry removed, Phoenix hardened prefs. | Privacy-hardened Firefox for Android. The mobile equivalent of LibreWolf. |
| Desktop + Android | Routes traffic through multiple relays for true anonymity. All users look identical to websites. | Journalism, whistleblowing, censorship evasion. Maximum anonymity. |
Pre-Hardened Browser Forks — Chromium
| Browser | Platform | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| All platforms | Built-in Shields (ad/tracker blocking), fingerprint protection, optional Tor mode. Highest PCMag privacy score (143). | Chrome switchers who want privacy with minimal friction. Best balanced option. | |
Ungoogled Chromium | Desktop Win / Mac / Linux / BSD | Removes all Google-specific web services, binary blobs, Safe Browsing, sync, and domain tracking. Drop-in Chromium replacement. | Purists who want Chromium performance with zero Google integration. Manual setup required. |
Firefox Hardening Frameworks (user.js)
| Framework | Philosophy | Breakage level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arkenfox | Maximum privacy, security and anti-fingerprinting. Comprehensive template with override system. ~12.3k GitHub stars. | Moderate to high | Power users who want deep control with well-documented override capability. |
| Betterfox | Minimum effective dose — balances privacy with performance and usability. Inspired by diminishing returns. | Low | Users who want a privacy boost without heavy site breakage. Performance-conscious. |
| Narsil | Fork of Arkenfox with more aggressive privacy emphasis over security. Depends on Arkenfox upstream. | High | Maximum privacy-over-security tradeoff. Advanced users only. |
| Phoenix | Hardened prefs used by IronFox and other Android Firefox forks. Continuation of Mull-era config. | Moderate | Mobile-oriented hardening for Android Firefox forks. |
All frameworks work by placing a user.js file in your Firefox profile directory. They override about:config settings on every browser launch.
Browsers with Built-in VPN
| Browser | VPN type | Cost | Scope | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| True VPN (proxy network) | Free 50 GB/month | Browser only | Brand new — rolling out in beta since March 24, 2026. Available in US, UK, DE, FR. Does not sell data or inject ads. | |
| Secure proxy (VPN-like) | Free Unlimited | Browser only | AES-256 encryption, no-logs policy audited by Deloitte. Only 3 region choices (Americas, Europe, Asia). No specific country selection. | |
| Full VPN (Guardian) | Paid ~$9.99/mo | Device-wide | Only browser VPN with independent third-party audit. Covers all apps, not just browser. Powered by Guardian/Mullvad infrastructure. | |
| Epic Privacy Browser | Built-in proxy | Free | Browser only | Chromium-based, open-source, no-logs. Blocks WebRTC leaks. Anti-tracking focus. |
| Aloha Browser | Built-in VPN | Freemium | Browser only | Free tier disconnects VPN after 60s if you switch apps. Premium adds more servers. TrafficMask feature hides VPN usage. |
| Secure Network (Cloudflare) | Free Limited data | Browser only | Powered by Cloudflare. Requires Microsoft account. Limited monthly data allowance. |
⚠ Most “built-in VPNs” are proxy-based, not true VPNs — they mask your IP but don’t provide full device-wide encryption. Only Brave’s offering works at the system level. Free browser VPNs may be susceptible to WebRTC and DNS leaks.
